Off-site supervised visits let children spend time with a parent at a park, café or activity in the community, with a trained supervisor present throughout. Safe Steps arranges off-site supervised visits across Perth and Western Australia when they’re assessed as safe and suitable.
What are off-site supervised visits?
Off-site supervised visits are supervised contact sessions held at an approved location in the community instead of a fixed venue. A park, a café, a library, a play centre or another family-friendly activity can give visits a more natural feel, while a trained supervisor stays present for the whole session.
They often suit families where supervised contact is already going well, where a child is more relaxed in an everyday setting, or where an activity helps a parent and child reconnect.
When off-site visits are suitable
Off-site visits are offered when they’re assessed as safe and appropriate. Before approving a location, we consider:
- the outcome of each parent’s intake and risk assessment
- any conditions in court orders, parenting plans or the referral
- the child’s age, needs and comfort
- whether the venue allows the supervisor to keep the child within sight and hearing
- crowds, exits, privacy and the chance of meeting the other parent by accident
If off-site visits aren’t suitable yet, supervised contact at an agreed location is usually the starting point, with off-site visits reviewed later.
What happens during an off-site visit
- Agreed plan: location, times and activities are agreed before the visit.
- Staggered arrival: handover arrangements are planned so the parents don’t cross paths.
- Full oversight: the supervisor stays with the child and parent throughout, and can end the visit if safety requires it.
- Factual notes: where needed, observations are recorded and can support a court report.

Frequently asked questions
Can we choose where an off-site visit happens?
You can suggest a location. We approve it only if it’s safe, suitable for the child and allows full supervision, and if it fits any court orders.
Is an off-site visit still fully supervised?
Yes. A trained supervisor is present for the whole visit, just as with any supervised contact session.
Are off-site visits available on weekends?
Yes. Safe Steps services are available 24/7, including weekends and public holidays, subject to staff availability.
